Madrid, 27 March 2021 – Naviera Armas Transmediterránea, a Canary Islands-based passenger and cargo shipping company, has signed a contract with Spanish engineering firm Satlink to provide broadband satellite connectivity to its fleet of 10 vessels. The shipping company has selected Satlink for its experience in the development of this type of services for the maritime sector, both in the defence and fishing sectors, as well as for the optimized satellite coverage it offers, thanks to its agreement with Hispasat, in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, geographical areas of operation of Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea.
With this contract, the shipping company continues its digitalization plan, through high quality and reliable connectivity, of critical services for its activity, both in terms of value-added services for its more than five million passengers per year, as well as for its operations and management. For users, Naviera Armas Transmediterránea will offer telephone services, high-capacity Internet access, electronic payment and access to contents, among others.
Corporately, it will guarantee connectivity to its crew and will optimize the real-time maintenance of its control and management operations (passenger list, administrative procedures, provisioning, etc.). This will allow Naviera Armas Transmediterránea to carry out direct actions from the ship by accessing the same information available at any of its land-based offices.
According to the agreement signed, Satlink will manage the service and provide 24×7 support to the entire fleet of Naviera Armas Transmediterránea, which currently covers a total of 39 routes, mainly inter-island navigation in the Canary Islands, as well as connecting the Granada port of Motril with Al Hoceima and Nador in northern Morocco.
Navieras Armas Transmediterránea’s ships will be equipped with a Hispasat Ku-band VSAT solution in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, which uses newest generation antennas to link up with the Spanish operator’s satellites that provide coverage in this area and are located at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers at a 30-degree position.
Satlink signed in June 2019 an agreement with Hispasat with the aim of expanding its offer of Ku-band VSAT communications to the maritime sector in areas of coverage of this operator’s satellites in Europe and Latin America.
Founded in 1992, Satlink is a Spanish engineering company specialized in satellite telecommunications. Satlink, which has agreements with the global satellite networks Inmarsat, Thuraya, Iridium and Hispasat, is a world leader as a provider of technological solutions for the fishing sector and commercializes satellite communications solutions in the terrestrial and aerial environment.
